Bartleet Tea Weekly Tea Market Report – Sale No 04 of 2022

The quantity of tea arriving at the Colombo Auction this week increased from 5,104,339.00 Kgs to 6,953,824.00 Kgs which traded in the previous week’s auction, whilst the Ex-estate quantity increased from 726,431.00 Kgs to 1,076,601.00 Kgs.

MARKET SEGMENTS: In the Ex-Estate Category: Best western BOP/BOPF’s were dearer by Rs.20-40 per Kg.  Below best BOP’s gained Rs.20-30 per Kg, BOPF’s gained Rs.10-20 per Kg.  Plainer BOP’s were dearer by Rs.20-30 per Kg, BOPF’s were dearer by Rs.10-20 per Kg.  Nuwara Eliya BOP’s were dearer by Rs.10-20 per Kg, BOPF’s were difficult of sale. Uda Pussellawa better BOP’s were irregular. Others were dearer by Rs.30-50 per Kg, BOPF’s were dearer by Rs.20 per Kg. Uva best BOP/BOPF’s gained Rs.30-50 per Kg and Rs.20-30 per Kg respectively. Others were firm and dearer. CTC – BP1’s continued to sell around last week levels.  PF1’s were firm to dearer.

Low Grown Leafy Market Segment:  Select Best OP1’s were fully firm, whilst clean Below Best varieties gained. Others and poorer sorts were fully firm to selectively dearer. Select Best BOP1’s were fully firm, whilst improved Below Best varieties gained. Others and poorer sorts too were fully firm to dearer. Select Best OP’s were fully firm, whilst improved Below Best varieties gained substantially. Others and poorer sorts too were dearer.   Select Best OPA’s maintained, whilst Below Best varieties gained substantially. Poorer sorts too gained but to a lesser extent. Select Best PEK/PEK1’s were fully firm to selectively dearer whilst others and poorer sorts maintained.

In the Tippy Market Segment:  Select Best FBOP’s were firm, whilst Best, cleaner Below Best and cleaner teas at the bottom appreciated. Balance too were dearer to a lesser extent. FF – Very Tippy teas continued to attract good demand. Best together with cleaner Below Best appreciated substantially. Balance too were dearer to a lesser extent. Well-made FF1’s together with cleaner Below Best appreciated. Balance too were dearer to a lesser extent. Overall premium market was firm to dearer.

CROP & WEATHER FOR THE PERIOD 17TH TO 23RD JANUARY 2022

  • Western/Nuwara Eliya Regions:
    Both regions reported bright weather throughout the week, whilst the Western Region reported chilly evenings. According to the Department of Meteorology, misty conditions in the mornings are expected in both regions in the week ahead.
  • Uva/Udapussellawa Regions:
    Bright weather was reported in both regions throughout the week. Misty conditions are expected in the morning hours in the Uva Region in the week ahead according to the Department of Meteorology.
  • Low Growns
    Clear weather conditions were reported in the Low Grown Region throughout the week. The Department of Meteorology expects misty mornings in some areas of the Ruhuna and Sabaragamuwa regions in the week ahead.
  • Crop Intake
    The Western and Low Grown regions maintained the crop intake, whilst an increase was reported in the Nuwara Eliya Region. The Uva and Udapussellawa regions reported a decline in the crop intake.
